Western North Carolina summers are made for sunshine, mountain views—and lazy river floats. One of our favorite ways to spend a summer day with the family is floating the French Broad River, especially the section from Champion Park in Rosman to the Lyon’s Road takeout. It’s the perfect blend of peaceful water, mountain scenery, and outdoor fun that doesn’t require a full-day commitment.
Why This Section is Perfect for Families
Champion Park in Rosman is an easy put-in spot with plenty of parking and access. The river is wide here, which makes it ideal for families with kids or anyone looking for a relaxing float without intense rapids. You’ll see plenty of native plants, a few blue herons if you’re lucky, and maybe even a kingfisher or two darting across the water.
The float to Lyon’s can take about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the water levels. It’s just enough time to unplug, drift a bit, snack a lot on the beaches, and soak in some sun (and sunscreen).
Our Summer River Float Checklist
- Tubes, canoes, kayaks or paddle boards!
- PFDs for everyone (even strong swimmers!)
- Dry bags for snacks, phones, and car keys
- River shoes or sandals (flip flops float away)
- Plenty of water and sunscreen
- A car at both ends (trust us—shuttle planning saves a lot of post-float chaos)
Bonus tip: Get all your gear and your shuttle taken care of by using a local outfitter like Headwaters Outfitters!
River Time is Fun Time—but Safety First
We’ve seen just how quickly fun on the river can turn if something goes sideways. Here are a few things we always think about—not just as parents, but as folks in the risk-management business:
- Have a plan for your valuables. Phones, wallets, and car keys have a way of jumping into the river when you least expect it. Get yourself a dry bag or two.
- Be mindful of summer storms. WNC weather can turn on a dime. Be watchful and aware of the weather.
- Homeowners tip: If you own riverfront property or host guests often, it might be time to check that liability coverage.
Local Perks
This section of the river is close enough to town that you can wrap up your float with a stop for ice cream or a drink at a local restaurant. We love the Yard or Ecusta Brewing!
The Bottom Line
There’s something magical about floating the French Broad in summer—kids laughing, cool mountain water, and no screens in sight. Whether you’re a seasoned floater or trying it for the first time, this stretch from Champion Park to Lyon’s is a low-stress, high-reward way to spend time together as a family.
If you ever have questions about protecting your gear, your property, or your peace of mind—whether on land or river—we’re just a phone call away.
Enjoy the float. Stay safe. And as always, protect what matters.
